Overview

Chitmunk's Clip Art Browser gives you instant access to a massive library of free artwork you can use in your card designs, no downloads or external tools required. The browser includes:

To open the Clip Art Browser, click the Clip Art button in the tool strip (left edge of the canvas), or use the picker that appears when editing an image element's source in the properties panel.

Searching for Icons

The search bar at the top of the Clip Art Browser lets you find icons by keyword. Type a term like "sword", "heart", or "shield" and results appear instantly. The browser searches across all available sources simultaneously.

Use the source tabs below the search bar to filter results:

Tip: Search terms work across all tabs. Searching for "dice" under the Board Game tab shows Kenney's dice art, while the same search under Icons shows dice icons from various Iconify collections.

Browsing by Tag

If you are not sure what to search for, browse by tag. The Clip Art Browser organizes icons into 14 category groups:

Click a category to see all matching icons. You can further refine within a category using the search bar.

Recoloring Icons

Most icons in the Clip Art Browser are monochrome SVGs, which means you can recolor them to match your card design. When you select an icon in the browser:

You can also change the color after adding the icon to the canvas by selecting the image element and adjusting the tint color in the properties panel.

Using Kenney Board Game Art

The Kenney board game art pack includes 523 pieces specifically designed for tabletop games. All pieces are licensed under CC0 (Creative Commons Zero), meaning they are in the public domain: you can use them in any project, commercial or personal, with no attribution required.

The collection includes:

Browse the Board Game tab to see the full collection, or search for specific pieces like "meeple" or "chip".

SVG Tiling Patterns

Chitmunk includes 32 built-in SVG tiling patterns that tile seamlessly across any size. These are ideal for card backgrounds, decorative borders, or texture overlays. The patterns are organized into 4 categories:

To use a pattern, switch to the Patterns tab in the Clip Art Browser and click a pattern to add it. Patterns are applied as background elements that fill the entire card area including the bleed zone. You can adjust the pattern's color and opacity in the properties panel.

Favorites

Found an icon you love? Click the star icon on any item to add it to your favorites. Favorites are saved globally across all your projects, so you can quickly access your most-used clip art from any design.

To view your favorites, click the Favorites tab (star icon) at the top of the Clip Art Browser. Remove a favorite by clicking the star again.

In Project

The In Project tab automatically tracks every clip art item you have used in the current project. This makes it easy to reuse the same icon on multiple cards without searching for it again. If you used a sword icon on your attack cards, it will be waiting for you in the In Project tab when you design your defense cards.

Project clip art is tracked automatically: there is nothing you need to do. The list updates as you add or remove items from your design.

Icon Licenses

The icons available through Iconify come from many different open-source collections, and each collection has its own license. Most are permissive (MIT, Apache 2.0, CC BY 4.0), but the specific terms vary.

Important: The game-icons.net collection (one of the most popular for board game design) is licensed under CC BY 3.0. This means you must provide attribution to the original icon authors if you use these icons in a published game. Check the icon details in the Clip Art Browser for specific attribution requirements.

Kenney board game art is CC0: no attribution required. SVG tiling patterns included with Chitmunk are also free to use without attribution.

When in doubt, click an icon in the Clip Art Browser to see its source collection and license information before using it in a commercial project.

Adding to Canvas

To add any item to your card design, simply click it in the Clip Art Browser. The item is added to the canvas as an image element, centered on the card. From there, you can move, resize, rotate, and style it using the same controls as any other image element.

You can also drag items directly from the browser onto a specific position on the canvas.
